Veteran Memorials

Douglas County, Kansas, Veteran Memorials

To honor those who have served in the military and are buried in Douglas County, Kansas, I am creating virtual military cemeteries on FindaGrave.com as many of the soldiers already have memorials on FindaGrave. I plan to create more detailed spreadsheets with information about the veterans and their military units but that will be an ongoing future project. Many of the memorials on FindaGrave do not have information about the soldier’s military experience so another phase of the project will be to verify the military experience of each of the veterans.

A listing of soldiers buried in Oak Hill Cemetery, Maple Grove Cemetery, Franklin Cemetery, Oread Cemetery (now Pioneer Cemetery), and the Catholic Cemetery was created by R. S. McFarland on 22 May 1904 and published in the Lawrence Daily World in Lawrence, Kansas, on 26 May 1904.  Most of these soldiers are Civil War veterans, but also include veterans from the War of 1812, the Mexican War, and the Spanish American War. The published listing is not complete and will need to be supplemented from other sources.
